Family, Hospitality, Food, Dancing Is Home...
"What is Palestine like?"
Palestine is a beautiful place filled with an ancient culture and strong ties to religion. It has many historical sites, such as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Western Wall, and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. It also has plenty of natural attractions, such as the Dead Sea. There are many little street markets (called souq) that sell fruits, vegetables, clothing, jewelry, and traditional food (such as falafel and ka’ak). Though this country has been around for centuries, it is under occupation, and our homeland is being taken away.
"What do you cherish most about your cultural heritage?"
Family is at the core of Palestinian values. Visiting relatives (and neighbors) is something that we do very frequently, about once or twice a week. Basically, spending quality time together plays an integral part in our culture. Food is another significant aspect of our heritage. Preparing food with grandparents/parents, passing down recipes, and eating together at the dinner table are all essential parts of the Palestinian lifestyle. Generosity and hospitality are also very important in Palestine. We are always ready to receive an unannounced guest with food, sweets, and Arabic coffee (called qahwah 3arabiyya). Dancing is something that is at the heart of our culture, as well. We love to do the dabke, which is a line dance performed with many people (with their arms linked usually).
