Wonder, Pure Joy, But Bittersweet...
"What is Korea like?"
South Korea is a place that I find to be fascinating and, despite my limited time there, a second home. Korea’s great, to be honest. I only have good memories from there, from walking the streets of Gwangju with my mom and my dad and seeing everything that these stores had to offer, to hanging out with my extended family and talking over Korean BBQ. I still remember the feeling of shock and wonder when I walked into the Hyundai department store and seeing their food court. I’m still in shock after going to a book museum inside the department store. I find that feeling of wonder accompanies me everywhere I go. One of my fondest memories is where I went to the city center of Gwangju and I got to see all of these amazing stores lined up one after another. I went to an archery range and an arcade where I tried out a VR rollercoaster. That wonder and joy and fascination and that feeling of freedom is something that I will always remember. Whenever I’m in Korea with my extended family, it's always a fresh feeling that’s mixed with pure joy to be with my family and a bittersweetness because I live on the other side of the world from these people. I remember the time I met my soon to be aunt who was marrying my uncle. It was just amazing to meet her while just eating a delicious dinner. Also Korean food is absolutely incredible. I’m a sucker for Korean BBQ and barley tea. So what is Korea? It’s a second home that is full of amazing food and wondrous places and incredible people, rich with culture modern and historic alike.
"What do you cherish most about your cultural heritage?"
This feels a little basic but Chinese New Year is probably what I cherish the most. I love the story behind it and I love what it means to me and my family. I might not have a huge family to celebrate it with, but me and my parents celebrate it in a way that matters to us. Because of that, Chinese New Year has become a very close thing to my heart and has become something that I really do cherish about my culture.
