Somewhere In The Heart Of Asia...
"What is India like?"
Situated in the heart of Asia, India is densely populated. India is a very diverse nation, and it has 22 separate official languages! Each province of India not only boasts its own unique language, but also has unique spices, cuisine, clothing styles, and dance forms. Events in India are colorful, musical, and filled with sweet and spicy foods. Indians dress their very best when attending festivals, weddings, and other ceremonies. Within India, pursuing higher education is valued and emphasized. The Indian film industry, "Bollywood", is based in Mumbai (Bombay). Bollywood movies have many songs and dances and children and adults around the world enjoy performing dances to these songs at various events. Watching Bollywood films was a Saturday afternoon tradition in my family as a child.
"What do you cherish most about your cultural heritage?"
The family as a unit has a high value in Indian culture. Parents will make many sacrifices to ensure their children do not have to struggle to reach their goals. When my dad moved from India to the USA to attend college in the early 1970s, his parents sold their home so my dad would have some money to start off with. They borrowed money from their neighbours to pay for tuition so my dad only had to focus on studying (financial aid was not available to international students). In return, when my grandparents were older and retired, my dad sent money to India to take care of them. I cherish the strong family support that is emphasized within Indian culture. When I was going through college, my parents did the same for me, and thus, it is my responsibility and privilege to take care of my parents and in-laws. I anticipate I will do the same for my daughter. This is just one example of how I value the strong family unit within my culture.
