More Than Just A Location On The Globe...
People ask me: "What is Taiwan like?"
Taiwan is more than a country on the world map. Not only is it a semi-tropical island in East Asia, it is also where my parents were born and raised, and it is a place that feels closest to home to me. It's somewhere I can see my mother smile in ways she never does here in America. To me, the warmth, love, security in this homeland is beyond compare. The sense of community and human touch that is present in that country is perfectly beautiful. With that being said, it's something that will shock and amaze you when you experience it yourself- that's for sure. The fascinating blend of Chinese tradition and modern influences, as well as highly developed economics, technology, and standards of living, has won the hearts of many foreigners.
Taiwan is magic. Taiwan is home.
"What do you cherish most about your cultural heritage?"
Without hesitation, the fact that the Taiwanese culture is a beautiful blend of Chinese, Austronesian, Japanese, and Western influences is what I cherish most. Surprisingly, Taiwan is sometimes said to be "more Chinese than China" but definitely being "much more than Chinese". As I was writing earlier, the community full of powerful human kindness and tradition is something I view extremely precious to my heritage. Growing up, that element of my culture has further created my own poise and charisma, allowing me to blossom into a Taiwanese-American that longs for more connections and knowledge of my own cultural heritage each day.
